Observers of Britain’s governing structure can be forgiven for scratching their heads in recent weeks as they watch the country reel through a succession of prime ministers without holding an election. Under Britain's parliamentary system, the public never actually votes for its prime minister. Instead, voters tick the box for a representative from their local area, who then becomes one of Britain’s 650 Members of Parliament. The party that wins a majority forms a government and puts their leader into the prime minister's seat. If that leader falls from grace, the party — and only the party — gets to choose a new leader and new prime minister.
A spokesman says former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has challenged an election commission ruling disqualifying him from holding public office for five years. The challenge in court Saturday came a day after the commission found that Khan illegally sold state gifts and concealed assets as premier. The ruling disqualified Khan under Pakistani law from holding public office for five years and he lost his seat in parliament automatically. The commission’s decision deepened lingering political turmoil in the impoverished Islamic country struggling with a spiraling economy, food shortages and the aftermath of unprecedented floods this summer that killed 1,725 people.
The Vatican and China have extended their oft-criticized deal on appointment of bishops. In a brief statement, the Holy See on Saturday announced the latest, two-year renewal of the 2018 arrangement. It said the Vatican is committed to “constructive dialogue” with China over the accord and in further developing bilateral relations. In recent years, conservative Catholics have slammed the deal given China's crackdowns on religious believers.
Zilli Schmidt, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Ravensbrueck concentration camps, has died at 98. She had become a vocal advocate for the recognition of the Nazi genocide of Sinti and Roma. Two men’s World Cup downhill races next weekend that start in Switzerland and finish in Italy have been called off due to a lack of snow on the final 300 meters of the course following an unseasonably warm fall. The Zermatt-Cervinia downhill against the spectacular backdrop of the Matterhorn was set to become the first cross-border event in Alpine skiing’s World Cup history. FIS says the races have been canceled “due to the lack of snow and the safety situation on last section of the race track” and will not be replaced.
Months after accusing disbarred attorney Alex Murdaugh of killing his wife and son, South Carolina investigators and prosecutors have released few details about the evidence that they believe connect him to the slayings. That’s prompted Murdaugh’s lawyers to file a flurry of court documents requesting information from the prosecution, seeking to publicly weaken the case before the January trial has begun. Prosecutors insist their case is strong even if they don't have eyewitnesses or any video of the June 2021 killings at the family's Colleton County home. The trial is set to start on Jan. 23.

Thousands of people in towns across Ethiopia have staged demonstrations against what they say is interference by outsiders in the country’s internal affairs. Hundreds of thousands of people in central and western Ukraine have woken up to power outages and periodic bursts of gunfire, as Ukrainian air defense tried to shoot down drones and incoming missiles. Russia has intensified its strikes on power stations, water supply systems and other key infrastructure across the country, the latest phase of the war as it nears the eight-month mark. It said that it had shot down 18 out of 33 cruise missiles launched from air and sea.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has criticized broadcasters for what he calls unacceptably low offers for rights to screen the Women’s World Cup next year. He says offers of “100 times less" than the value of men’s World Cup rights deals have been rejected. The women's World Cup starts in July hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The time zones there mean many games will be played in nighttime hours in key markets in Europe and the Americas. Infantino took a further jibe at broadcasters who he said also pushed FIFA to treat women’s soccer more equally.
The Flyers’ Wednesday night performance had moments of beauty and grace — Tony DeAngelo’s outlet pass to spring a breakaway, Travis Konecny’s late consolation goal, a handful of Felix Sandström’s saves — but, for the most part, the 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers could be described by one w…

CHICAGO — Velus Jones Jr. has given it some thought. If he had that one sequence from last week’s loss to the Washington Commanders to do over again, if he had a redo on the punt he muffed inside the Chicago Bears 10-yard line with 8 minutes, 12 seconds remaining, he would have just stayed away.

In Zahedan, a southeastern city with an ethnic Baluch population, state TV aired footage showing a battered city on Saturday after a day of protests. The outburst of protests in Zahedan came as demonstrations across Iran continue over the the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police. Although the protests first focused on the country’s mandatory hijab, they have transformed into the greatest challenge to the Islamic Republic since the 2009 Green Movement.

West and Central African countries are battling deadly floods that have upended lives and livelihoods, raising fears of further disruption of food supplies in many areas battling armed conflict. Above-average rainfall and devastating flooding have affected 5 million people this year in 19 countries across West and Central Africa, according to a new U.N. World Food Program situation report. The situation is similar in other parts of West Africa including Cameroon, Niger and Chad where the nation’s government declared a state of emergency after floods displaced a million people.
Japan and Australia have signed a new bilateral security agreement to reflect the deteriorating security outlook for their region driven by China's increasing assertiveness. The upgrade of the Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation was the major outcome of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in the west coast city of Perth on Saturday. The pact was first signed in 2007 when China’s rise was less concerning. It builds on a reciprocal access agreement inked in January that removes obstacles to holding joint military exercises in either country. Japan said its Self-Defense Forces will train and take part in exercises with the Australian military in northern Australia for the first time under the agreement.
